People's reliance on Bangladesh Awami League has increased, shows IRI Survey

Some 73 percent of Bangladeshis feel the country is going in the right direction, according to the survey of US-based International Republican Institute (IRI).

This is a nine percentage point increase since November 2015 and a 38 point increase over the last two years, says the IRI, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organisation committed to advancing freedom and democracy worldwide.

According to the poll released on Wednesday, 83 percent of the respondents said the security situation in Bangladesh is very good or somewhat good, while 77 percent said they felt the country is politically stable.

The respondents were optimistic about the country's future. Of them, 72 percent believe their personal economic condition will improve in the coming year, and 65 percent believe the country is becoming more stable politically.

Some of the major findings of the survey are given below:

  • 73% Bangladeshis feel country headed in the right direction; a 9% increase since November 2015
  • 71% Bangladeshis expressed their liking of Awami League as a party with only 48% liking BNP
  • 83% Bangladeshis feel security conditions in the country are very good or somewhat good
  • Awami League beats BNP in approval rating for trustworthiness, leadership, policies, anti-corruption nation building and women empowerment
  • 77% Bangladeshis feel the country is now politically stable
  • 83% Bangladeshis believe that the economic conditions in the country are very good or somewhat good
  • 72% Bangladeshis believe their personal economic situation will improve in the coming
  • 92% Bangladeshis believe that the education system has gotten much better or somewhat better over the past year
  • Awami League more dependable than BNP for education, health, infrastructure, security, economy and nation
