Australian High Commissioner in Dhaka Gregory Anatole Wilcock has expressed his country's interest at a meeting with the State Minister for Energy, Power and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid at his secretariat office on Monday.
"The Australian High Commissioner has showed their interest to install LNG terminal as per requisition of Bangladesh. The High Commissioner also showed interest to invest in LNG sector," State Minister Nasrul Hamid told the media after the meeting.
In the wake of the growing demand of energy, the government took plans to install LNG terminal in the country in 2010. However, despite being priority project of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the authorities failed to install a single one.
The High Commissioner told the meeting that the Australian private sector is keen to export LNG to Bangladesh and also to install the terminal, an official said.
The energy ministry plans to start importing 500mmcf of LNG as soon as possible to feed the energy starve Chittagong City and its adjoining areas as the country's lone offshore Sangu gas field dried up and went out of operation since 2013.
"We are yet to make any commitment to the High Commissioner, but awaiting to accept their proposal for scrutiny," the State Minister said.
