"We'll continue support to the development efforts of Bangladesh," Blake said when she paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office.

PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.

The British High Commissioner said she would work for strengthening further the bilateral ties of the two countries.

She said the British businesses want to expand their operation in Bangladesh, especially in the energy sector.

Blake also highly praised the performances of the participants of "O Level" and "A Level" exams in Bangladesh.

The new British envoy informed the Prime Minister that she was "very impressed" to see the enthusiasm in the ongoing "Amar Ekushey Boi Mela" in Dhaka.

Sheikh Hasina recalled the support and contribution of the British people and political leadership during the War of Liberation in 1971 and appreciated the continued British development assistance to Bangladesh since independence.

The Premier also expressed happiness as three Bangladeshi-origin women became lawmakers in the British parliamentary polls held in May 2015.

Tulip Rezwana Siddiq, Rushnara Ali and Dr Rupa Haque have been elected MPs in the British House of Commons.

Tulip Siddiq is a granddaughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and niece of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In this connection, Sheikh Hasina said, "This was the manifestation of the Bangladeshi diaspora taking greater interest in British politics thus contributing to both the communities."

Reiterating her aim to further develop the country, the Prime Minister said her government has expanded the internet services up to the rural level while some 257 types of online service are being provided to the common people.

Expressing satisfaction over the existing bilateral relations between the two countries, the Premier hoped this would further be strengthened during the tenure of the high commissioner.

Welcoming the British envoy to Bangladesh, she assured her of extending allout support and cooperation while discharging duties during her stay in Bangladesh.

Referring to the discussion over climate change issues, Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh has adopted programmes to combat climate change.

She also mentioned her government's various schemes in social safety net programmes.

PM's International Affairs Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi and PMO Secretary Suraiya Begum were present on the occasion, among others.
