We won't allow Bangladesh's soil to be used for terrorism and militancy: reiterates PM Sheikh Hasina

"We want peaceful atmosphere in this region ... we won't allow Bangladesh's land to be used for conducting terrorist and militant acts against any country," she said.

The Prime Minister made the comments when Speaker of the Indian Lok Sabha Sumitra Mahajan paid a courtesy call on her at Hotel Sonargaon here on Sunday afternoon.

After the meeting, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters at his Jatiya Sangsad Office.

Terming present world as interdependent, the Premier put emphasis on maintaining good relations between the neighbours.

In this connection, she underscored the need for working together on various issues at regional and sub-regional levels to ensure welfare and development of the people of the region.

Sheikh Hasina also laid stress on informal visits by the leaders of the two friendly countries to further strengthen the relations.

Mentioning that India is a great friend of Bangladesh, the Prime Minister recalled with deep gratitude the contribution of India during the Great War of Liberation in 1971.

She also expressed her gratitude to the Indian political leaders and parliament members for their overwhelming support to unanimously pass the historic LBA Bill in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, terming it as a "historical event".

In reply, Sumitra Mahajan said it was successful because of the initiative of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and cooperation of the Indian government.

The Indian Lok Sabha speaker recalled the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh June last year and said the relations between the two countries reached a "new height" after his (Modi) successful and fruitful visit (to Dhaka).

She also highly appreciated Bangladesh's tremendous development in socioeconomic fields under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In this connection, the Premier said her government has been relentlessly working to establish a poverty-free country by implementing various programmes.

Secretary General of Indian Lok Sabha Anoop Misrwa and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla were present during the time.
