"Bangladesh joins the international community in reaffirming its firm conviction to uphold peace and security, protect human rights and promote development across the globe, as enshrined in the UN Charter and the Bangladesh constitution," she said in a message on the occasion of the United Nations Day.
Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh will continue to draw inspiration from the vision of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to pursue peace, justice, development and cooperation as the cardinal principles of its engagement with the UN and the wider international community.
The Prime Minister said Bangladesh will continue to do its part including through our flagship role in promoting a "culture of peace and non-violence", its unwavering commitment to the international rule of law and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, and its ' "zero tolerance" approach to all forms of terrorism and violent extremism.
"We shall remain in the forefront of the UN's much-valued work in peacekeeping and peace building in conflict-torn settings...we need to better harness the UN's ability to forge consensus on ending deadly conflicts and other drivers that continue to give rise to a series of humanitarian crises," she said.
Sheikh Hasina said in a world still afflicted by wars, conflicts, hunger and poverty, the underlying basis for establishing the UN remains as relevant as ever. "The historic adoption of a set of universal, ambitious, and people and planet-centric '2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development' renews our faith in our collective ability to banish poverty and hunger from our world once and for all," she said.
The Prime Minister said Bangladesh's stellar performance with achieving the MDGs, addressing the impact of climate change and disasters, promoting women's empowerment, migrant's rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, widening access to ICT-enabled services at the grassroots level, and scaling up innovative development solutions have been duly recognized by the UN with the label of a "role model" for the developing world.
