Given the tremendous advancements, the country is now all set to take the next giant leap through demonstrating its full commitment towards the universal announcement centering SDGs -- the declaration is supposed to be made in the next general assembly.
According to the summary of the “Millennium Development Goals: Bangladesh Progress Report 2015”, revealed last week, the goals already been fulfilled include poverty alleviation, ensuring food security, primary school enrollment, gender parity in primary and secondary-level education, lowering infant and under-five mortality rate and maternal mortality rate, improving immunisation coverage and reducing communicable diseases.
Stellar progresses are being made to reduce the prevalence of underweight children, increase enrolment at primary schools, lower the infant mortality rate and maternal mortality ratio, improve immunization coverage and reduce the incidence of communicable diseases.
In recognisiton of tremendous achievements to cut down poverty, one of the first among eight MDGs, Bangladesh received special honours from the UN for halving the number of people in extreme poverty (from 58 percent to 29 percent) more than a couple of years ahead of time.
Under Goal 2: Achieve Universal Primary Education, the country is set to accomplish 100 percent net enrolment ratio in primary education.
Under Goal 3: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women, ratio of girls to boys in primary and secondary education has already been achieved. In the same category, the ratio of girls to boys in tertiary education, share of women in wage employment and proportion of seats held by women in parliament may be achieved.
Under Goal 4: Over the years, child mortality rate has been brought down by 73% outperforming the global rate by a large margin. In 1990, the rate was 144 per 1,000, but now it stands at 38 per 1,000.
Similar successes are also being displayed, under Goal 5, in cutting down the under-5 mortality rate. The number of under-five deaths has dropped to below 6 million for the first time this year.
Five targets have been met while two are to be achieved under Goal-6: Combating HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases.
