"Dasherkandi Sewerage Treatment Plant" plans to treat the sewerage using modern method alongside protecting the environment of the area.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) today approved the project at its 5th meeting in the current fiscal at the NEC conference room in the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with ECNEC Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the Chair.
Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal, after the meeting, briefed reporters the outcome. He said ECNEC cleared a total of five projects with an outlay of Taka 6,553 crore.
"Of the total project cost, the government will provide Taka 3,947 crore from the national exchequer while Taka 2,587 crore would come as project assistance and the organization concerned will contribute Taka 17.85 crore from the own fund," added Kamal.
He informed four projects are new while one is revised in the approved five projects.
Talking about the Dasherkandi Sewerage Treatment Plant, the Planning Minister said the project mainly aims at treating sewerage through modern method alongside protecting the environment of that area and the adjacent Hatirjheel project area.
The sewerage treatment plant would be set up at Khilgaon in the city with the capacity of treating 500 million liters sewerage per day alongside construction of one sewage lifting station.
Dhaka WASA is entrusted to implement the project by December 2019.
Mustafa Kamal said Dhaka WASA can provide sewerage facilities to only 20 per cent of city dwellers through its lone sewage treatment plant at Pagla under Kadamtali Thana.
Considering the growing demand, Dhaka WASA has recently framed a master plan under which it aims to set up 11 sewerage treatment plants in the city.
The ECNEC approved another project "Land development, protection and erecting boundary wall of the 2nd block of Rampal Power Plant project areas" with Taka 462.57 crore. Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) will implement the project by June 2017.
Another project approved by the ECNEC is "Bangladesh-Myanmar Moitree Road (Balukhali-Ghundhum border road) construction" with Taka 54.55 crore to be implemented by the Roads and Highways Department by June, 2017.
The proposed road would be constructed at Ukhia upazila under Cox's Bazar district and Nikhonchhari upazila under Bandarban district.
The other projects approved in the meeting are South Western Integrated Water Resources Planning and Management, 2nd phase, (Tk 482 cr), Hatirjheel area Integrated Development project including Begunbari Khal, 4th revised (Tk 2,236 cr).
Ministers and State Ministers attended the meeting while Planning Commission members and Secretaries concerned were present.
