UNDP Offers Helps For Development Of Enclaves

UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Robert Watkins made the offer during courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her Tejgaon office here today.

Briefing reporters after the meeting PM's Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury said they discussed various matters related to mutual interests as well as the issues of socio-economic development of Bangladesh.

The UN coordinator said, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon is very optimistic about Bangladesh. As he had begun his diplomatic career from Bangladesh so he (Ban) has a very special sympathy for this country.

Robert praised Bangladesh's progress in various areas under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, particularly the success of Bangladesh in achieving millennium development goals (MDG) and unprecedented poverty reduction. Bangladesh would be able to show the same success in achieving the goals of post-MDG goals, he hoped.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina pointed out her government's constant efforts to achieve 'Vision-2021' saying that in the first step food security of the people has been ensured and the government is now working for nutrition demand.

"Vision-2021 is very crucial for Bangladesh as the country will celebrate golden jubilee of its independence in 2021," Sheikh Hasina said adding her government envisage reducing further the country's poverty rate by 10 percent within next three years.

In this regard the Prime Minister also highlighted the steps taken for development of education, particularly the female education saying highest importance has been given to the education sector.

Mentioning the movement of some political parties led by BNP and Jamaat the Prime Minister said poor people of the country suffered most from their unwise siege programme and destructive activities. In fact, BNP and Jamaat are out to destroy our all success, Sheikh Hasina said.

UNDP representative termed the scale of violence and destruction very unfortunate saying "I hope that Bangladesh could overcome the situation."
