PM Inaugurates Mawna Flyover

"With the inauguration of the flyover, a revolution has taken place in road communication between Dhaka, Gazipur and greater Mymensingh district," she said.

The Prime Minister said this at a civic rally at Pear Ali Degree College Ground in Sreepur here this afternoon after the opening the much-awaited flyover at Mawna Chowrasta on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.

Sheikh Hasina said the work on upgradation of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway to four lanes is nearing completion. "Eighty percent work of the project has already been completed and the rest of the work would be finished by June next," she said.

With the completion of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, she said, the communication between different districts of the region would be easier, and dynamism would be infused into all sectors including trade and commerce.

Spelling out the government's success in the development of communication sector, the Prime Minister said her government after taking office for the second time in 2009 constructed a huge number of bridges and flyovers across the country.

These included Shaheed Buddhijibi Bridge in Keraniganj, Shaheed Ahsanullah Master Flyover in Tongi, Sultana Kamal Bridge on the Shitalakkhya, Hazrat Shah Amanat Bridge on the Karnaphuli river, Shaheed Abdur Rab Serniabat Bridge on the Kirtonkhola river, Bandar Link Flyover in Chittagong, Ruma Bridge and Thanchi Bridge on the Sangu river, Teesta Bridge on the Teesta river, Wazed Mian Bridge on the Karotoa river in Rangpur and Sonatala Bridge on the Karotoa river in Sirajganj.

Besides, she said, the facelift of Dhaka city has been changed due to construction of flyovers and overpasses. These are Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover, Banani Railway Overpass, Kuril Flyover and Zillur Rahman Flyover on Mirpur-Airport Road.

The Prime Minister said the construction work of Sheikh Lutfar Rahman Bridge was completed in Gopalganj, while the construction work of Sheikh Kamal Bridge on the Andharmanik river, Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni Bridge on the Boleshwar river and Sheikh Russel Bridge on the Bhanga river, Kazir Bazar Bridge on the Surma river, Paira Bridge on the Paira river and Asmat Ali Khan Bridge on the Arial Khan river on Madaripur-Chandpur Road, Second Kanchpur Bridge, Second Meghna Bridge, Second Shitalakkhya Bridge and Second Gumti Bridge is going on.

She said 20-km Bus Rapid Transit is being constructed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport including upgradation of Jatrabari-Kanchpur Road to eight lanes. The work of the 20.1-km elevated MRT Line-6 is also going on under Dhaka Bus Rapid Transit Development Project, she added.

Sheikh Hasina said the upgradation work of 70-km Joydevpur-Elenga to four lanes and the 192-km highway from Chittagong to Daudkandi is also progressing fast. Country's leading construction firm Abdul Monem Limited has constructed the Mawna flyover under the supervision of the 17 ECB of Special Works Organization (West) of Bangladesh Army.

The work of the 450-metre long and 19-metre width flyover with 450-metre approach road was completed in about two years, three months before the stipulated time at a cost of Taka 70 crore.

The work of the flyover situated at Mawna Chowrasta under Sreepur upazila, 60 kilometres off the capital, began on October 26 in 2013 and was finished on April 7 this year.

Earlier, the Prime Minister inaugurated the flyover by unveiling the plaque and cutting ribbon. She also released pigeons and balloons on the occasion.

After opening the flyover, she crossed it by riding on her jeep.

Thousands of cheerful people standing on both sides of the newly-constructed flyover greeted Sheikh Hasina by clapping and raising slogans. They also released balloons along with the Prime Minister with the inauguration of the flyover.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque, Chief of Army Staff General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, Zahid Ahsan Russel, MP, and high civil and military officials were present on the occasion.
