Chief of Maldivian National Defence Force Major General Ahmed Shiyam showed the interest when he paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her Jatiya Sangsad Office here this evening.

After the meeting, PM's Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhuri briefed reporters.

The Maldivian defence force chief told the Prime Minister that he was impressed after visiting the Khulna Shipyard.

He said he was interested to buy offshore patrol boats being built in Khulna Shipyard for the Maldivian defence force.

General Shiyam highly praised the role of Bangladeshi peacekeepers deployed in maintaining peace in different trouble-torn regions of the world.

He thanked the Bangladesh government for sending one lakh litres of drinking water and five mobile water treatment plants to the Maldives in December last when the country faced acute water crisis due to the damage of its lone desalination treatment plant in a fire.

The Maldivian defence force chief also mentioned that about 80,000 Bangladeshis have been working in the Maldives.

"The hard-working Bangladeshi workers are making huge contribution to the Maldives economy," he said.

The Prime Minister put emphasis on exchanging package tour between the two countries during tourism season, saying that it would immensely benefit both Bangladesh and the Maldives.
