Younger daughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Sheikh Rehana, Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury, former minister Dr Dipu Moni, MP, and other family members of the Prime Minister joined the prayers.
A special prayer was offered on the occasion seeking continued peace, progress and welfare of the country as well as the greater unity of the Muslim Ummah. Noted Indian Islamic scholar Maulana Saad led the prayers.
Tens of thousands of Muslim devotees from 32 districts of the country and 4,982 foreign nationals from 50 countries participated in the first phase Ijtema. The New Delhi-based Tablig-e-Jamaat has been organising the Ijtema since 1966.
Ignoring chilly winter and the 20-party blockade, thousands of devotees gathered on the bank of the Turag at Tongi to join the first phase of Biswa Ijtema.
The first phase of the 50th Biswa Ijtema, which formally started after Fazr prayers on Friday with religious sermons by Islamic scholars and prayers, ended with Akheri Munajat.
Devotees from 32 districts attended the first phase, while devotees from the other 32 districts will participate in the second phase slated for January 16-18. The Ijtema is being held in two phases from 2012 to ease accommodation problem.
