People with Disabilities Deserve Support from Family to International Levels: Saima Hossain

"The people with disabilities are in no way burdens of society rather they could be precious assets of the country if we can extend our hands to flourish their latent talents," a press release quoted her as saying as a panel speaker at an international conference in New York of the United States yesterday.

Putul, a US-licensed autism and clinical psychology specialist, urged the well-off people of society to offer their assistance to supplement the government and non-government initiatives at the national levels.

"The physically-challenged people will have to be groomed through more affection and love by other people as they are an integral part of our society," she told the conference titled 'Mental well-being, disability and development toward accessible and inclusive sustainable development goals'.

Putul, also the daughter of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, highlighted the remarkable progresses of various programmes in Bangladesh for the welfare of the autistic children.

United Nations University International Institute for Global Health and the World Bank Tokyo Development Learning Center, DESA organized the event co-sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Argentina, and the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at the UN Headquarters.

Bangladesh's Permanent representative to the UN Mission Dr A K Abdul Momen also joined the programme moderated by chief of the Secretariat for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Akiko Ito.

The Permanent Representative of Argentina to the United Nations Mar-a Cristina Perceval, UN Global Health Co-coordinator Dr Atsuro Tsutsumi, World Health Organisation's scientist Dr Mark van Ommeren, Professor of Melbourne University Heri Minaj also addressed the conference, among others.
