ECNEC Okays Development Project For Improving Road Safety

Under the project, visibility in highways along with signaling systems and road turnings will be improved so drivers could run vehicles smoothly.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) yesterday approved the project titled "Improvement of Road Safety at Black Spots on National Highways" involving Taka 165 crore.

The approval came from an ECNEC meeting held at the NEC conference room in the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with ECNEC chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal, after the meeting, told reporters that the ECNEC has approved a total of eight development projects including the road safety project with a total outlay of Taka 2,887.28 crore.

"Of the total cost, the government will provide Taka 1383.48 crore from the national exchequer while Taka 1,497.09 crore would come as project assistance and organizations concerned will contribute Taka 6.71 crore from own fund," he added.

Of the 144 black spots in the highways, 34 are in Dhaka, 6 in Gopalganj, 8 in Comilla, 14 in Sylhet, 11 in Khulna, 2 in Barisal, 35 in Rangpur and 34 in Rajshahi.

The Planning Minister said under the project, there will be development of intersections of the highways, improvement of pedestrian crossings, simplification of the road turnings, removal of eyesight obstacles, establishment of signs, signals and road markings.

The Roads and Highways Department will implement the project by June 2016.

The ECNEC also approved "Construction of Multi-storey Residential Building at Azimpur Government Colony" at a cost of Taka 220.45 crore to address the accommodation problem for the government employees in the capital. Ministry of Housing and Public Works is entrusted with implementing the project by June 2018.

Under the project, there will be two 20-storey buildings having 152 flats, each of 1000 square feet, while another four 20-storey buildings would be built having 304 flats, each of 800 square feet.

Another project titled "Flood management and improvement of living standard in Haor areas" involving Taka 993.38 crore was approved in the meeting. Ministry of Water Resources will implement the project by June 2022.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide TK 594.46 crore as project assistance. The project will be implemented in 32 upazilas of Kishoreganj, Mymensingh, Netrakona, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Brahmanbaria districts.

Besides, the ECNEC gave nod to a project titled "Construction of multi-storey residential building at Motijheel Government Colony" at a cost of Taka 176.42 crore to be completed by June 2018. Under the Project, four 20-storey buildings would be constructed having 532 flats, each of 650 square feet.

The Planning Minister also informed that currently there is accommodation facility for some 15,000 government officials and employees in the capital against the demand of three lakh.

The other projects approved in the ECNEC meeting are: construction of switching system for rural electrification activities with Taka 121.58 crore, construction of 3rd and 4th dual gauge line on Dhaka-Tongi section of Bangladesh Railway and construction of dual gauge double line on Tongi-Joydevpur section of Bangladesh Railway with Taka 1106.80 crore (1st revised) with Indian credit of Taka 902.63 crore, construction of Matlab Bridge over River Dhonagoda with Taka 84.61 crore and expansion of mobile library programme of Bishwasahitya Kendro with Taka 19.04 crore.

Ministers, State Ministers, Planning Commission members and secretaries concerned attended the meeting.
