PM's Participation in UNGA: A Great Success of Bangladesh in The World’s Stage

In all considerations, Bangladesh's participation under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the 69th UNGA has created scope for consolidating the country's image abroad and highlighted the government's multifaceted successes in national and international arena, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali told a news briefing on Tuesday.

The participation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the 69th UNGA was a memorable event for Bangladesh as the country celebrated the 40th anniversary of its membership to the UN.

While addressing the UNGA on September 27, the Prime Minister expressed her deep concern over volatile global security situation and emergence of religious militancy and violent extremism in different parts of the world. She urged the United Nations to play the central role as the custodian of global peace, security and development saying the evil forces destroying secular fabrics of the nations should be eliminated.

Sheikh Hasina also sought the international community's support in the ongoing trial of war criminals in Bangladesh for the sake of justice, human rights and rule of law.

"The highly transparent, impartial and independent International Crimes Tribunals, Bangladesh, have already completed the trials of a few key criminals who perpetrated heinous crimes against humanity. We look towards the international community's full appreciation of the aspirations of our people for this long-awaited justice," she said.

Apart from joining the UNGA, the Prime Minister held bilateral talks with the heads of government and state of different UN member states and chiefs of various international organizations including the United Nations and the Commonwealth on the sidelines of the UNGA.

Sheikh Hasina held meetings with her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, Norwegian Premier Erna Solberg, Belarusian Prime Minister Mikhail V. Myasnikovich and Nepalese Prime Minister Sushil Koirala.

The Prime Minister along with world leaders joined a reception hosted by US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. She also joined a reception and luncheon hosted by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Sheikh Hasina attended the inaugural session of the UN Climate Summit-2014 and delivered a speech at the "National Action and Ambition Announcement" session of the Summit. She also took part at a high-level discussion of the Global Education First Initiative.

She met with US business leaders urging them to create a new business partnership to help Bangladesh become a middle income country by 2021. She also highlighted government's liberal fiscal policies and incentives for foreign investors.

The Prime Minster joined a discussion of the Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHG) and attended a summit on international peacekeeping operation at the UN Headquarters.

She joined a high-level summit on the UN Peacekeeping at the UN Headquarters when she reaffirmed Bangladesh's unequivocal support to the UN Secretary General's strategic review on peacekeeping by providing rapid help at all times.

Sheikh Hasina co-chaired a session of the summit with US Vice-President Joe Baiden.

She joined a gala function at UN Headquarters marking the 40th anniversary of Bangladesh's membership to the United Nations.

At the function, friends of Bangladesh including United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, have showered praises on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her invaluable contribution to world peace and security side by side with stellar development of the country.

They also lauded Sheikh Hasina for her firm stance against terrorism and militancy and achieving millennium development goals by Bangladesh in different fields.

Apart from Ban Ki-moon, UN Under Secretary General Ameerah Haq, United States Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennadiy Gatilov, UK Ambassador to the United States Peter Westmacott, Senior Official of the Ministry of External Affairs of India Binod Kumar, UNDP Administrator Helen Clark and UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova also spoke on the occasion.

Sheikh Hasina also attended a reception accorded by expatriate Bangladeshis.
