The Executive Committee of National Economic Council (Ecnec), presided over by the Prime Minsiter Sheikh Hasina, approved the country’s second largest infrastructure project in 2012.

The project gathered momentum after the government put the project among its six first track projects.

To ensure quick implementation, the cabinet on principle approved a law related to land acquisition for the project this year.

The Metrorail’s detailed design will be finalised in July next year and the project will be completed by 2019, according to officials of the project.

The Metrorail Project is preparing to invite eight bids for six construction packages, as the construction work would begin from the next year.

A total of 56 metro rails are to operate every three minutes and carry 60,000 passengers an hour, which is expected to significantly reduce the amount of traffic congestion in the capital.

The tracks will run above the middle of roads, starting from Uttara and ending at Motijheel. Each train will take less than 40 minutes to run the whole distance.

Its bridge will be about two-storey high and the stations will have two floors.

A 21 kilometers long bridge will be built first and tracks would be laid on it. The first floor of the stations will have automated doors and ticket booths. The stations will be 180 metres long.

During the construction project five temporary construction yards will be built.

The 16 Metrorail stations will be Uttara (North), Uttara (Centre), Uttara (South), Pallabi, IMT, Mirpur 10, Kaziparha, Taltala, Agargaon, Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, Sonargaon, National Museum, Doel Chattar, Bangabandhu National Stadium and Bangladesh Bank.
