ECNEC Okays 4 projects worth Tk.1762 crore

The project aims to improve the existing weak power distribution Infrastructures of Chittagong zone in line with the government's vision for bringing all under electricity coverage by 2021.

The approval came from the ECNEC meeting held at the NEC conference room in city's Sher-e-Banglanagar with ECNEC Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal told reporters after the meeting that the ECNEC approved four development projects including the power distribution system with a total outlay of Taka 1,762.94 crore.

"Of the total project cost, the government will provide Taka 1,736.86 crore while the remaining Taka 36.08 crore will come from the own fund of the organization concerned," he added.

The Power Development Board under the Power Division is entrusted with implementing the "Improvement of power distribution system in Chittagong Zone" project for the July 2014 to June 2018 period involving Taka 1,099.70 crore.

Once the project is implemented, some five lakh new subscribers will be added with the existing 6.80 lakh subscribers. Besides, some 2,310 KM new distribution lines would be set up under the project facilitating transmission of some 1,528 MW of power.

The day's ECNEC meeting gave nod to the "Rural Infrastructures Improvement Project (Comilla, Brahmanbaria and Chandpur)" with Taka 564.11 crore to be implemented by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) from July 2014 to June 2019 period.

The two other approved projects are: "Ensuring Nutrition and Food Security through Integrated Agriculture development" involving Taka 73 crore and "Construction of 140 meter bridge and 140 meter viaduct on River Chitra adjacent to the old Ferryghat under sadar upazila of Narail" involving Taka 36.13 crore.

Another project titled "Construction of double rail line from Akhaura to Laksam and improvement of the existing line" at an estimated cost of Taka 5,833.70 crore was placed before the day's ECNEC meeting, but did not get the approval.

ECNEC meeting sources said the Prime Minister asked the Railway Ministry to come up with a fresh project proposal within two weeks incorporating dual gauge line instead of meter gauge line.

She said there would be no more meter gauge rail lines from now. The Prime
Minister also stressed the need for starting the work of Chittagong-Cox's Bazar rail line.
