ECNEC Okays Six Projects Worth 7,839 Crore Taka

Fifty seven Palli Bidyut Samitys (PBS), out of total 72, across the country, under Rural Electrification Board (REB) will be engaged with the projects to give 11.50 lakh new connections.

The projects are -- Extension of Rural Electrification in Dhaka Division-II, Extension of Rural Electrification in Rajshahi and Rangpur Divisions-II and Extension of Rural Electrification in Chittagong and Sylhet Divisions-II.

The ECNEC meeting held at the NEC conference room in city's Sher-e- Bangla Nagar with Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal after the meeting told reporters that the government is determined to supply electricity to every village in the country by 2021.

He said the ECNEC approved another three projects apart from the three electrification projects. The six development projects would require a total cost of Taka 7,839 crore.

"Of the total project cost, the government will provide Taka 5,441 crore from the national exchequer while Taka 2,397 crore will come as project assistance," he added.

Under the three electrification projects, 26,190 km new transmission line would be installed while 2,810 Km transmission line would be rehabilitated/ renovated in the five divisions.

Of the total, 8,940 Km new line and 1,060 Km rehabilitation/renovation in Dhaka division, 7,700 Km new line and 800 Km rehabilitation/renovation in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions, and 9,550 Km new line and 950 Km rehabilitation/renovation in Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.

REB is entrusted to implement the project by June, 2018, which will cover 43 districts in five divisions.

Officials said the country needs a total of 3,26,263 km transmission line to ensure electric connectivity to every village by 2021.

The ECNEC approved another project "Inclusive City Governance Project (ICGP)" with Taka 2,043 crore. Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) will implement the project by June, 2020 in four new city corporations - Narayanganj, Gazipur, Rangpur and Comilla.

Another two revised project approved in the meeting are Rehabilitation of Narasunda River and development of adjacent areas of Kishoreganj Pourasava (2nd revised) and Strengthening of Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) through developing infrastructure (1st revised).

In the briefing, the planning minister said the government has implemented 95 per cent of the Annual Development Programme (ADP) in the fiscal 2013-14.

In FY14, Taka 56,793 crore was disbursed against the total ADP allocation of Taka 60,000 crore.

"The implementation rate would have been more if the country would not face political instability in the early days of the fiscal," observed Mustofa Kamal.

He informed 25 ministries have implemented ADP over 96 per cent while seven ministries have done over 91 per cent.

The minister said LGED, disaster management and relief, power division, expatriate welfare and overseas employment, housing and public works, civil aviation and tourism, and defense ministries have implemented cent per cent ADP allocation while religious affairs, road division, youth and sports, fisheries and livestock, home, agriculture, science and technology, primary and mass education, information and law ministries have done 99 per cent.

Ministers, state ministers, members of planning commission and secretaries were present at the meeting.
