Bangladesh-China Signed Five Bilateral Instruments

Officials of the two countries inked the instruments after official talks between the two countries at Great Hall of the People here this afternoon.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang led their respective sides at the talks.

After the meeting, Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haq said out of the five instruments, two are agreements, one is memorandum of understanding (MoU) and two are exchange of letters (EoLs).

PM's Media Advisor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury and Press Secretary AKM Shamim Chowdhury were present.

The agreements are---The Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation between China and Bangladesh and The Joint Venture Agreement on Establishment of a Coal-based Ultra-critical Power Plant at Patuakhali, the foreign secretary said.

The LoEs are--The Exchange of Letters on Second Batch of Calamity Rescue Equipment between the Governments of Bangladesh and China and The Exchange of Letters on Feasibility Study of Flood Prevention and Management in Bangladesh between the Governments of China and Bangladesh.

The MOU was signed between China Harbour and Engineering Company and Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) for establishment of a Chinese economic and investment zone in Chittagong.

At the bilateral talks, the Bangladesh Prime Minister sought Chinese government's support for implementing five proposed projects.

Li Keqiang assured Sheikh Hasina of his government's necessary steps in this regard, asking his commerce minister to prepare necessary methodology for executing the projects.

The proposed projects are--National ICT Infra-Network for Bangladesh Government (Phase-III), Construction of Rajshahi WASA Surface Water Treatment Plant, Construction of Second Railway- cum-Road Bridge over River Karnaphuli at Kalurghat Point near the present railway bridge, Construction of a New Dual Gauge Railway Line from Chittagong to Cox's Bazar via Ramu and Ramu to Gundum near Bangladesh-Myanmar border and Establishment of Eastern Refinery Unit-2 and Single Point Mooring Project.

The issue of construction of Sonadia Deep Seaport came up in the talks of the two prime ministers. "The two sides agreed to continue discussion to this end," he said.
