PK Sinha will lead India side while Monowar Islam will lead Bangladesh in the meeting. The 6th round of the meeting was held in New Delhi in June last year.

The Secretary-level meeting comes after India has started giving 500MW power through the Behrampur-Bheramara cross-border power transmission link connected in Oct last year.

A Joint Working Group meeting will follow the steering committee meeting.

Bangladesh is also eyeing greater Indian cooperation for “sustainable solutions” of its power problems.

India is helping Bangladesh implement the 1320MW coal-fired power plant at Rampal.

Bangladesh drew a master plan for generating 39,000 MW power by 2030.

Officials say the Secretary level meeting is also significant from the sub-regional perspective.

Bangladesh-India-Bhutan and Bangladesh-India-Nepal joint working group meetings were also scheduled next month.

Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pankaj Saran said Indian investors were keen to invest in Bangladesh in different sectors including power and infrastructure.

But he said it would require some “extra effort” as India was not a capital surplus economy like western countries or China.

Some 284 Indian projects are currently registered at Bangladesh Board of Investment with a prospect of $3 billion investment capable of creating employment for 57,000 people.

Prime MInister Sheikh Hasina, who prioritises power generation as key to Bangladesh's future growth, is keen to carry forward sub-regional cooperation with India and the Himalayan countries in power sector.
