Briefing reporters after the meeting that lasted about two hours, PM's Advisor of International Affairs Dr Gowhar Rizvi said, the Prime Minister assured the UN Secretary General's special envoy that she would continue her efforts to bring all parties to the polls. Gowhar Rizvi said, "First of all, Mr. Tarannco, who arrived here with a special message of the UN Secretary General, conveyed it to the Prime Minister." "The message is that the UN wants to see Bangladesh in its role to continue the process of democratic institutionalization and development," the advisor said. "So the UN wants an inclusive, free and fair election with a consensus among the political parties," he said.
Gowhar Rizvi said, "The UN wants an election with consensus of all political parties for holding it in an even playing field and ensuring equal opportunity for all political parties. They see no need for discussion on the caretaker government issue." The Prime Minister assured the UN official that the Election Commission can take any decision to create a level playing field for all political parties. The government has no authority to interfere in the activities of the Commission. Gowhar Rizvi said, the Prime Minister informed Tarannco of her repeated calls to the opposition leader to sit for dialogue in the parliament and outside to come to a consensus on election issues.
Gowhar Rizvi said, "Tarannco welcomed the government decision to uphold the constitution saying there is no need for discussion on caretaker government at this stage." About the special message of the UN secretary general, Gowhar Rizvi said, in the message the Secretary General termed Bangladesh as an example for the whole world in the areas of development, democracy and pluralist society.
