Dr. Pranab Kumar Panday:

Bangladesh, a nation nestled in South Asia, has long been recognised for its resilient spirit and remarkable progress. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is a significant contributor to this transformation, whose astute leadership has propelled the country forward on various fronts. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's daughter, Sheikh Hasina, has worked hard to shape Bangladesh's diplomacy in the image of her father's far-sighted vision. This article explores how Sheikh Hasina is carving a diplomatic path that upholds her father's ideals while pursuing Bangladesh's national interests on the global stage.

Sheikh Hasina's pursuit of a foreign policy based on Bangabandhu's vision is grounded in her deep respect for her father's principles and his unwavering commitment to the country's independence. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was an ardent advocate of justice, peace and the right to self-determination. He believed in strong regional cooperation and fostered close ties with neighbouring countries. Sheikh Hasina, driven by her father's legacy, has continued his legacy of diplomacy and expanded Bangladesh's reach on the international stage.

Under Sheikh Hasina's leadership, Bangladesh has witnessed a significant shift in its foreign policy, focusing on elevating its global standing. Recognising the importance of diplomatic relations, she has embarked on a mission to forge strong ties with regional and international powers. By engaging with nations across the globe, Sheikh Hasina aims to position Bangladesh as a prominent player in regional and global affairs.

Bangladesh's foreign policy under Sheikh Hasina has prioritised fostering regional cooperation and integration. She firmly believes that stability and progress in the region can be achieved through collaborative efforts. Consequently, she has participated heavily in regional forums, including the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). By promoting dialogue and cooperation among member states, Bangladesh aims to address common challenges, such as poverty, climate change and terrorism, while fostering economic growth and regional stability.

Sheikh Hasina has been a vocal advocate for addressing the pressing issue of climate change, recognising its impact on Bangladesh's vulnerable geography. Her commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience has positioned Bangladesh as a global leader in climate diplomacy. She has pushed for measures like the Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan, which highlight the need for international cooperation and the acquisition of financial resources to lessen the impact of climate change in the country. Sheikh Hasina's leadership in this area has garnered international recognition, elevating Bangladesh's profile as a responsible global actor.

In line with Bangabandhu's vision of economic self-reliance, Sheikh Hasina has pursued a robust economic diplomacy strategy. Recognising the importance of foreign investment and trade, she has actively sought partnerships with countries across the globe. Bangladesh's sustained economic growth bolstered by the expansion of sectors like textiles, pharmaceuticals and information technology has attracted the attention of international investors. Sheikh Hasina's diplomatic efforts have resulted in increased foreign direct investment and enhanced trade relations, contributing to Bangladesh's economic prosperity.

Sheikh Hasina's foreign policy also embraces a humanitarian approach, aligning with Bangabandhu's social justice and compassion ideals. The prime minister has demonstrated exceptional generosity by providing shelter to the Rohingya fleeing persecution in Myanmar. Despite the tremendous strain on resources, Sheikh Hasina has offered refuge to the displaced, emphasising the importance of upholding human rights and dignity. Her unwavering commitment to the Rohingya cause has showcased Bangladesh's humanitarian spirit and elevated the nation's global reputation in human rights.

Bangladesh's current leader, Sheikh Hasina, has prioritised increasing the country's standing in the global community. In light of the importance of multilateralism, she has participated in international organisations, including the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. Bangladesh's participation in peacekeeping missions under the UN banner has highlighted the country's commitment to global peace and security. Moreover, Sheikh Hasina's diplomatic efforts have resulted in Bangladesh securing key leadership positions in international organisations, further enhancing the nation's influence and visibility on the world stage.

In an increasingly interconnected world, Sheikh Hasina has embraced the potential of digital diplomacy to strengthen Bangladesh's foreign policy. She has engaged directly with global audiences through social media platforms and digital channels, promoting Bangladesh's culture, achievements and development initiatives. This approach has allowed her to shape public perception, reach out to the international community and showcase the country's progress, enhancing Bangladesh's soft power and diplomatic outreach.

Despite the achievements in Bangladesh's foreign policy under Sheikh Hasina's leadership, some challenges lie ahead. One such challenge is navigating geopolitical dynamics, especially in the context of Bangladesh's relationships with major powers. While safeguarding national interests, striking a delicate balance between different global players will require astute diplomacy and strategic manoeuvring. Another challenge is addressing internal and external security concerns. Bangladesh has faced threats from extremist groups, and Sheikh Hasina's foreign policy must continue to prioritise regional and international cooperation to counter terrorism and maintain stability.

Looking to the future, Sheikh Hasina's vision for Bangladesh's foreign policy remains focused on achieving sustainable development, maintaining regional peace and upholding the principles of justice and human rights. She aims to deepen Bangladesh's engagement with emerging powers and strengthen ties with traditional allies. Furthermore, she envisions a more significant role for Bangladesh in shaping global agendas, particularly in areas such as climate change, poverty eradication and sustainable development.

Sheikh Hasina's foreign policy approach exemplifies her commitment to realising the vision of her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She has strengthened Bangladesh's diplomatic standing in the international arena by adhering to his principles of justice, self-determination and regional cooperation. From addressing climate change to promoting economic diplomacy and humanitarian efforts, Sheikh Hasina's leadership has propelled Bangladesh forward, enabling the nation to play an increasingly influential role in shaping regional and global affairs. As Bangladesh continues to chart its path on the world stage, Sheikh Hasina's unwavering dedication to Bangabandhu's diplomatic vision will undoubtedly remain a driving force in the country's foreign policy pursuits.
