ASEAN to be more engaged in Rohingya repatriation: Indonesian FM to Prime Minister

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will be more engaged in the repatriation of the Rohingya people from Bangladesh.

Visiting Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno L. P. Marsudio informed this today when she paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her Jatiya Sangsad office here this evening.

After the meeting, PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters.

The Indonesian foreign minister said two ASEAN teams will visit Rakhaine State of Myanmar to see the infrastructures that are being built for the Rohingya people.

In this connection, the prime minister said alongside the Rohingyas, the people of other communities are trying to enter Bangladesh from Myanmar.

Sheikh Hasina said China, India and Japan are constructing houses in Rakhaine State for the forcibly displaced Rohingyas.

The Indonesian foreign minister highly praised Bangladesh’s tremendous socioeconomic development and women empowerment under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

While talking about women empowerment in Bangladesh, the prime minister mentioned that the country’s women are now holding very high positions in all sectors like administration, judiciary, education, sports as well as in the armed forces and in law-enforcement agencies.

Both the prime minister and the Indonesian foreign minister expressed satisfaction over the existing bilateral relations between the two countries.

At the outset of the meeting, Retno Marsudio congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on her assumption of office as the premier for the fourth time.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, PMO Secretary Sajjadul Hassan and Indonesian Ambassador in Dhaka Rina Prihtyasmiarsi Soemarno were present on the occasion.
