Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today asked the authorities concerned to do whatever necessary for the better treatment of eminent writer and educationist Professor Zafar Iqbal.

The prime minister gave the directives while visiting Zafar Iqbal at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka this afternoon.

Iqbal, a professor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), is now undergoing treatment at the Critical Care Unit of the CMH as he sustained a knife attack on the SUST campus on Saturday.

PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stayed at the CMH for nearly 45 minutes and enquired about the condition of Prof Zafar Iqbal.

She also talked to the family members of Zafar Iqbal including his wife Prof Dr Yasmin Haque as well as the members of the medical board formed for the better treatment of the noted writer.

The medical board members apprised the premier of the latest health condition of Zafar Iqbal, the press secretary said.

Iqbal was brought to Dhaka from Sylhet by an Air Force air ambulance on Saturday night and admitted to the CMH following the directives of the prime minister.

He was stabbed by a fanatic youth on the SUST campus in Sylhet in the afternoon on the day.

Witnesses said Iqbal came under the attack just when he was returning to ICT Bhaban of the campus after attending an academic festival of his Electronics and Electrical Engineering (EEE) department in the university's central auditorium.
