ECNEC approved ten projects including three to ensure uninterrupted power supply

The approval came from the weekly ECNEC meeting of the current fiscal year held at the National Economic Council (NEC) conference with ECNEC Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said a total of 10 projects were approved in the meeting with an estimated cost of Taka 22,876.31 crore.

"Of the total projects cost, the government will provide Taka 8,668.18 crore from the national exchequer while the organisations concerned will contribute Taka 585.02 crore from their own funds and the remaining Taka 13,623.11 crore will come as project assistance," he added.

The minister informed that seven projects are new while three are revised among the ten approved projects.

Mustafa Kamal said Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Limited (PGCB) will construct 400 KV new transmission lines and expand 400 KV existing substation and repair five substations of 132/33 KV under its Network Strengthening Project, with an estimated cost of Taka 13,703.31 crore by June 2021.

"Of the total project cost, the government will provide Taka 3,729.25 crore from the national exchequer while the organisations concerned will contribute Taka 266.44 crore from their own funds and China will provide Taka 9,707.62 crore on G-to-G basis as project assistance," he added.

ECNEC also approved the capacity strengthening, rehabilitation and intensifying of power distribution system (Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chittagong and Sylhet Divisions) with an estimated cost of Taka 3,403.83 crore.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in the meeting, observed that a conflicting situation can be created if there is operation of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) in the same area, said the Planning Minister while briefing the newsmen.

ECNEC also gave nod to the capacity strengthening, rehabilitation and intensifying of power distribution system (Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna and Barisal Divisions) with an estimated cost of Taka 3,077.54 crore.

The other approved projects are second revised of 'Establishment of BSCIC Industrial Park, Sirajganj' with Taka 628.10 crore, second revised of Gas Transmission Capacity Expansion- Ashuganj to Bakhrabad project with Taka 513.46 crore, second revised of Construction of flyover at Muradpur (two gate and GEC portion) with Taka 696.34 crore, Construction of some 398 residential flats at 20 abandoned houses in Gulshan, Dhanmondi and Mohammadpur areas with Taka 366.53 crore, Upgradation of Shaheed Moyezuddin Bridge to Pachdona
portion road into National Highway on Tongi-Kaliganj-Ghorashal-Pachdona regional highway with Taka 82.97 crore, first phase of the Bakkhali river flood control, drainage, irrigation and dredging in Cox's Bazar district with Taka 203.93 crore and enhancing the operation capacity and efficiency project for Dhaka Metropolitan Police with Taka 200.30 crore.

Ministers, State Ministers and Planning Commission members and secretaries concerned were present, among others.
