"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken all responsibilities for the treatment of the ailing poet when he called on the premier at her official Ganabhaban residence here on Sunday evening," said PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim.

During the call on, Sheikh Hasina enquired about the health condition of the poet, who has been suffering from Glaucoma disease.

Helal Hafiz at that time presented two poetry books -- Je Jole Agun Jole and Kobita'71 -- to the prime minister.

During his 45-minute meeting, the poet also recited his own poems before the prime minister.

Ophthalmologist of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Dr Nuzhat Chowdhury and PM's Special Assistant Mahbubul Hoque Shakil were present on the occasion.

One eye of the 68-year-old poet has fully been damaged and the condition of another eye is critical due to glaucoma, doctors said.
