ECNEC approves procurement of 200 coaches for Bangladesh Railway

The approval was given in the 9th ECNEC meeting of the fiscal year 2016-17 held at the NEC conference room in the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area with ECNEC chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Of the approved eight projects, five are new while three are revised ones.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said of the total project cost, Tk 1,440.35 crore will come from the state exchequer and Tk 20.14 crore from the organizations concerned while remaining Tk 2,027.71 crore will be available as project assistance.

About the project for the procurement of 200 MG passenger coaches, he said its estimated cost is Tk 927.52 crore. Of the amount, China will provide Tk 713.52 crore while Tk 214 will come from the government exchequer.

"With the implementation of the project, Railway will be able to give passengers modern, improved and safe services," said the planning minister.

Other projects include Rural Electrification Upgradation Project (Tk 1399.83 crore), transforming the highway of Shayamganj-Zaria-Birishiri-Durgapur into a national highway (Tk 316.02 crore), construction of residential buildings for judicial officials at Dhaka's Azimpur (Tk 96.22 crore), construction of Patuakhali Medical College and Hospital (Tk 584.46 crore) and re-excavation of Sureshwar canal (Tk 59.06 crore).

Ministers and state ministers attended the meeting while planning commission members and secretaries concerned were present.
