ECNEC approved power project for South-Western region

The approval came at the meeting of the ECNEC held in the NEC conference room in city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal, after the meeting, briefed newsmen about the outcome. He said the ECNEC cleared a total of five projects including the power project with an outlay of Taka 2,454.68 crore.

"Of the total project cost, the government would provide Taka 2,359.31 crore from the national exchequer while the organizations concerned would contribute Taka 95.37 crore from own sources," he added.

The Planning Minister said West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited will implement the power project and the timeframe of the project implementation is from July 2016 to June 2020.

The implementation of the project will meet the electricity demand of the South-Western region following completion of the Padma Bridge, he added.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the meeting asked the authorities concerned to complete the power project work by 2 and a half years to 3 years, he said.

Mustafa Kamal said ECNEC okayed another project; 2nd phase of "Introduction of 3G technology and expansion of the 2.5G network" involving Taka 675.81 crore to reach 3G services to the remote areas of the country.

He said Teletalk Bangladesh, Limited, will implement the project. Of the total project cost of Taka 675.81 crore, the government will provide Taka 607.79 crore while the rest of Taka 68.02 crore will come from the organisation's own fund.

Under the project, some 1562 BTS towers will be erected.

Referring to the approval of the "Generating power by co-generating system and establishing sugar refinery at North Bengal Sugar Mills" project with Taka 328.18 crore, the planning minister said the government has taken initiatives to make the North Bengal Sugar Mills diversified.

The meeting also approved the Baniachong-Ajmiriganj road construction project (Taka 116 crore) and Teknaf-Ramu-Gerichang-Palang (Taka 60.49 crore) connecting road project.

Ministers and State Ministers attended the meeting while members of the planning commission and secretaries concerned were present.
