ECNEC approves eight development projects

The approval came at the 25th meeting of the ECNEC in the current fiscal held at the NEC conference room on Tuesday in the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with ECNEC Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal, after the meeting, briefed newsmen about its outcome.

He said the eight projects approved would require Taka 1,442.41 crore for execution.

"Of the total project cost, the government will provide Taka 953.52 crore from the national exchequer while the organizations concerned will contribute Taka 25.04 crore from their own funds and the remaining Taka 463.85 crore would come as project assistance," he added.

The minister informed that seven projects are new while one is revised among the approved eight projects.

The ECNEC today cleared the establishment of second campus of Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University with Taka 238.87 crore.

Planning Ministry sources said Bangladesh University Grants Commission and Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University will implement the project by June 2019 at Pahartali of Chittagong and Hathazari of Cox's Bazar.

Another project "Establishment of supervisory control and data acquisition system" was approved by the ECNEC involving Taka 152.20 crore to ensure efficiency in electricity management at the zone under DESCO.

Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (DESCO) is entrusted to implement the project by June 2019 at Gazipur, Narayanganj, Dhaka Metropolitan city (north), Tongi and Purbachhal Model Town with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The Planning Minister said the project would help ensure uninterrupted power supply to a great extent in the project areas.

On the other hand, in the beginning of the meeting, Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal presented a flower bouquet to the Prime Minister on behalf of his ministry for inclusion of her name in the annual list of the World's 50 Greatest Leaders by US magazine, "Fortune". Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been ranked 10 in the list.

The other projects approved in the meeting are Enhancing physical and academic facilities of Noakhali Science and Technology University with Tk 238.48 crore, Modernization of food and Radiation science facilities of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission with Tk 47.67 crore, Establishment of BSCIC printing industrial estate with Tk 140.41 crore, Kaliakoir hi-tech park, 3rd revised, with Tk 394.15 crore, Development of Sylhet-Sunamganj road with Tk 140.65 crore and Ruma-Bogalake-Keokradang road development, 1st phase, with Tk 89.98 crore.

Ministers and State Ministers attended the meeting while Planning Commission members and secretaries concerned were present.
