ECNEC approves 16 development projects

Among those, five projects are related to power sector including distribution of connection to 15 lakh clients through expansion of rural electrification.

Rural Electrification Board is to implement the expansion of rural electrification project at 77 Palli Bidyut Samities across the country by December 2018.

Under the project, there will be construction of some 44,000 kilometer 33 KV or lower voltage line, construction of some 83 new power sub stations with 33/11 KV capacity, augmentation of some existing 35 power sub stations, providing 15 lakh power connections and 35.70 acre land acquisition.

The approval came at Tuesday's ECNEC meeting held at the NEC conference room in city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with ECNEC Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal briefed newsmen on the outcome of the meeting.

Of the total cost of Taka 16,888 crore, Kamal said, the government would provide Taka 14,041 crore from the national exchequer while remaining Taka 2,250 crore would come as project assistance and the organization concerned would contribute Taka 596.27 crore from own fund.

The 14 projects are new while two revised among the approved 16 projects, added the planning minister.

The ECNEC also approved another project "Providing stipend for primary education-3rd phase" with Tk 3067.39 crore. Under the project, some 1.30 crore pre-primary and students up to class VIII of the primary schools situated at 486 upazilas, excluding city corporation and Pourasabha areas, would be given stipend.

The other projects approved in the meeting are: various infrastructural development of Dhaka South City Corporation with Tk 1292.61 crore, Ghorashal 4th Unit Re powering project with Tk 2029.24 crore, Land acquisition, protection and feasibility study for Bangladesh-Singapore 700 MW ultra super critical coal-based power plant with Tk 746.26 crore, Transforming the production system of Chatak Cement Company Ltd to Dry process from Wet process with Tk 666.82 crore, Land acquisition, rehabilitation, EIA and feasibility study for setting up 2600 MW ultra super critical coal-based power plant at Pekua in Cox's Bazar under the UGCB Ltd with Tk 515.85 crore, construction of connecting road for Khulna coal-based power plant, 1st revised with Tk 185.80 crore, and Installation of modern and digital broadcast equipment at National Betar Bhaban with Tk 45.29 crore.

The ECNEC also cleared Bangladesh rural water supply and sanitation project, 1st revised, with Tk 384.12 crore, Renovation of civic architecture of Jamalpur town alongside development of cultural center with Tk 126.59 crore, construction of residential flats for senior secretaries, secretaries and Grade-1 officials in city's Eskaton area with Tk 273.96 crore, Supply and Installation of emergency equipment for strengthening the security measures of all the international airports in Bangladesh with Tk 89.56 crore, construction of nine police super office buildings (including CID and PBI offices) with Tk 74.74 crore, Sylhet division rural access road development project with Tk 287.04 crore and construction of preliminary infrastructures for Hi-tech Park, Sylhet (Sylhet Electronics City) with Tk 187.13 crore.

Ministers, State Ministers and Planning Commission members and secretaries concerned were present at the meeting.
