Published on February 17, 2016Given the current flow of investment, there is a crisis of gas in the country, she said adding that providing more gas connection depends on gas reservoir and capacity of exploration. The government is making constant efforts to discover new gas fields to increase gas production and supply gas to industries.
Replying to a question from treasury bench member Fazlur Rahman the Prime Minister said the government is discouraging use of pipeline gas in residential areas to promote production and use of cylinder gas. The government has already started giving tax benefit for producing cylinder gas, she said.
Replying to a supplementary from independent member Haji Selim Sheikh Hasina said the government would consider reducing the price of diesel after recovery of the accumulated loss of the petroleum corporation caused from giving subsidy in this sector before.
She said the petroleum corporation is under the debts of over Taka 38,000 crore in addition to VAT and other taxes. For the first time, the corporation could recover a portion of the debts this year from high price of diesel, she said.
Ruling out the observation of Haji Selim about low trend of foreign investment in the country, the Prime Minister said foreign investors are coming up with investment in various sectors including infrastructure, power, EPZs and Special Economic Zones as the government has created opportunities for them.
Replying to a question from Ali Azam of Bhola-2 constituency, she said the construction work of a 225 MW power plant has already been launched in Bhola.
She hoped that more gas will be available in the district and it will attract more foreign investment there.
