PM Sheikh Hasina inaugurates construction of cyclone centres in Barguna

The centres have been built under "Fael Khair" programme of King Abdullah Humanitarian and Charitable Foundation of Saudi Arabia.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the centres on Tuesday through a video conference from her residence with Saudi Prince and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of King Abdullah Humanitarian and Charitable Foundation at Amtali upazila of Barguna district.

Visiting Saudi Prince and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of King Abdullah Humanitarian and Charitable Foundation Turki Bin Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz, member of the Trustee Board Prince Badar bin Abdullah and President of Islamic Development Bank Dr Ahmad Mohammad Ali Al Madani also joined the function at Amtali.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the late Saudi King for extending assistance to lessen sufferings of the people of Southern Bangladesh who were badly affected by super cyclone Sidr in 2007.

Sheikh Hasina said Barguna and other parts of Southern Bangladesh are the most disaster prone region of the country. School- cum -Cyclone Shelters would help people to have better security during any disaster as well as education round the year.

The Prime Minister also thanked the Saudi Prince and members of his delegation for joining the event. She hoped that the projects under "Fael Khair" programme would play very important role to further strengthen disaster management capacity of Bangladesh.

Finance Minister A M A Muhith also spoke at the function from Ganobhaban side while state Minister for Finance Abdul Mannan, Visiting Saudi Prince and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of King Abdullah Humanitarian and Charitable Foundation Turki Bin Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz and IDB President Ahmad Mohammad Ali Al Madani delivered speeches from Amtali.

A total of 173 School- cum- Cyclone Shelters are being constructed under "Fael Khair" programme in 13 districts of southern Bangladesh including Barguna, Patuakhali and Bhola at a cost of US$130 Million donated by the King Abdullah Humanitarian and Charitable Foundation for the Sidr and Aila affected people.

Of them, construction works of 61 School- cum -Cyclone shelters have been completed while construction works of the remaining 112 are progressing.

A total of 41 School-Cum-Cyclone shelters including today's seven shelters were handed over to the local authorities and 20 more are ready to be handed over.
