Britain is a time-tested friend: PM Sheikh Hasina

"Dhaka attaches great importance to its relations with London as the United Kingdom is a time-tested friend of Bangladesh," she said.

She came up with the remarks when outgoing British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Robert Winnington Gibson called on the Prime Minister at her office here this morning.

After the meeting, PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters.

He said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed gratitude for the unwavering support extended by the British people and the political leaders during Bangladesh's War of Liberation in 1971.

She reiterated her government's "zero tolerance policy" against terrorism and militancy.

Elaborating various pro-people steps of her government, the Prime Minister said her administration opened up everything for further flourishing the private sector.

Talking about materializing "Digital Bangladesh" programme, Sheikh Hasina said her government is working on turning the country's 8,000 post offices into e-centres to reach ICT services to the people's doorsteps.

"Over 2400 post offices have already been upgraded to e-centres," she said.

The British high commissioner thanked the Prime Minister for extending support and cooperation during his tenure in Bangladesh.

PM's Principal Secretary Md Abul Kalam Azad was present, among others.
