The other targets that DPE will meet include setting up 6,000 tube-wells at schools and supplying 14,678 laptops with multimedia projectors and increasing the percentage of “competency-based” questions in primary terminal exams from 25 to 50, according to a press release.

The targets were fixed under the annual performance agreement (APA) which was signed by the primary and mass education ministry and its four subordinate departments yesterday in the ministry's conference room as part of its quarterly performance assessment.

Director generals of DPE, the Bureau of Non-Formal Education (BNFE), the National Academy for Primary Education (NAPE), and Compulsory Primary Education Implementation Monitoring Unit (CPEIMU) signed the deals.

In the APA, the BNFE has set targets to provide basic literacy and life skills-based education to 11.52 lakh people between 15 and 45 years in 64 districts. NAPE will take measures to upgrade Primary Training Institute offering “Certificate in Education” (C-in-Ed) training while CPEIMU will work to finalise the formalities for providing financial benefits to 3,000 teachers who either retired or died before December 31, 2012.

The move has been taken in line with the government's recent emphasis on promoting a performance-based work culture and improved governance.
