Published on September 26, 2015South-South cooperation can foster durable peace and security. The volatile global security situation and violent extremism continue to pose a significant challenge to sustainable development in the South, she said at a high-level roundtable on South-South Cooperation at the UNHQ here.
Sheikh Hasina said the newly-adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are particularly relevant to the countries of the South. Despite a remarkable progress, global south countries still face challenges of inequality, illiteracy and under-development, she said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon co-chaired the roundtable attended by heads of state and government of 18 countries including Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Pakistan and South Africa. The leaders of these countries took part in the discussion.
The Bangladesh Prime Minister said the countries of global south may differ in size, strength and level of development, but they share a common development vision. With this in mind, Bangladesh hosted a high-level meeting on South-South Cooperation and Development in Dhaka earlier this year which focused on financing South-South initiatives and technology transfer within the South, she mentioned.
Sheikh Hasina said regional cooperation in the South focuses on forging physical connectivity across borders and new patterns of trade, investment and other economic activities. "Establishment of the BRICS Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank is a positive development in this respect."
She said Bangladesh has a range of good practices on poverty alleviation, social protection, disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, non-formal education, primary healthcare delivery, food security, sustainable fisheries and access to ICT. "We stand ready to share these experiences with other countries," she added.
