Cabinet Approves "Civil Courts (amendment) Act, 2015"

The approval was given in the regular meeting of the cabinet held at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Briefing reporters after the meeting the Cabinet Secretary said it would expedite the disposal of the civil cases as civil cases with more monetary value could be disposed off in lower courts at district level.

The amendment proposed increasing the jurisdiction of the Assistant Judges to deal with the civil cases of assets value of Taka 15 lakh which is Taka two lakh now while capacity of Senior Assistant Judges has been increased to Taka 25 lakh from Taka 4 lakh.

In the appellate courts, the amendment proposed that a District Judge would deal with the civil cases worth Taka five crore which is now Taka five lakh, the cabinet secretary said.

The cabinet also has given final approval to the draft of the "Bangladesh Coast Guard Act-2015". The new law will replace the existing one framed in 1994 which is deficient from the point of organizational, administrational and operational aspects.

The cabinet secretary said the Coast Guard Act has been framed in the same framework of the 'Border Guard Bangladesh Act. Apart from administrative issues, the new law has clearly defined various offenses and their punishment.
