She also urged the BCL leaders to take out 'weeds' from the organization and uphold the glorious history of the party. A politician should know how to sacrifice, as without sacrifice one can give nothing to the people, she said.

Sheikh Hasina was addressing a discussion organized by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) marking the National Mourning Day at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) here.

"The best achievement in the life of a politician is public confidence, trust and their love. If you want to get love from anyone you have to give them love. It doesn't matter what you have gained in the worldly life."

Sheikh Hasina said Bangabandhu used to say that the soil of Bangladesh is fertile to produce good crops. But weeds also grow along with crops. So you have to remove the weeds for better production, she said urging the BCL leaders to get rid of the weeds from the organization.

General Secretary of Awami League Syed Ashraful Islam, member of Advisory Council of Awami League Prof. Sultan Shafi and Dhaka University teacher and translator of "Asomapto Athmajiboni of Bangabandhu" Professor Fakhrul Alam took part in the discussion.

President of the BCL Saifur Rahman Sohag presided over the function while general secretary SM Zakir Hossain also spoke among others.

The Prime Minister, the eldest daughter of Bangabandhu, said Bangabandhu gave up everything in his life to free the nation from subjugation. He always said behind every great success there is a big sacrifice.

Sheikh Hasina unveiled the publication of BCL "Matribhumi" marking the National Mourning Day.

Sheikh Hasina said the blow of August 15 carnage was not only a blow to a family nor it was aimed at capturing state power. The very objective of the massacre was to foil the victory and independence of the Bengali nation.

In view of this, the defeated force killed four national leaders in the central jail, and in a planned manner they launched propaganda and falsehood against Bangabandhu's family. They wanted to ensure that no successor of Bangabandhu comes to power again in future.

Sheikh Hasina said Bangabandhu started the trial of the war criminals after independence and many of them were punished and serving in jail. Many of the war criminals left the country with Pakistani passport. Bangabandhu closed the doors of communal politics and curtailed the voting rights of the war criminals.

Ziaur Rahman is the main betrayer who repealed Section 12 and Section 38 partly through promulgating martial law ordinance allowing the war criminals to get back their voting rights. Thus he destroyed the whole spirit of the War of Liberation.

Following in the footprint of Ziaur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina said, her wife Khaleda Zia observes her birthday on August 15 to express solidarity with the defeated force of the War of Independence who carried out the August 15, 1975 carnage. Khaleda has no faith in independence and she could never accept the victory of the nation in the Liberation War, she added.

"Though we two sisters survived the killing, Khandakar Mustaq and Ziaur Rahman were afraid of public outrage against them if we come to the country. All senior Awami League leaders were kept in the prison till 1979. And scores of Awami League leaders and workers were tortured, intimidated and killed by Ziaur Rahman," Sheikh Hasina said.

Pointing out the glorious history of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the Prime Minister said Bangabandhu established the students' front to carry forward the language movement and struggle of independence of the Bengali nation from the forefront.

Sheikh Hasina also pointed out the support and guidance of her mother Fazilatunnessa Mujib to the BCL during the time when Bangabandhu was in prison, saying even she never hesitated to sell her ornaments to provide financial support to the BCL.

Bangabandhu built up the BCL as an organized force and they were at the forefront in all movements. Bangabandhu during his jail life passed his all directives with regard to movement to the BCL first through Bangamata Fazilatunnessa Mujib, she said.

Sheikh Hasina said the Pakistani junta interrogated Begum Mujib four times and had a plan to implicate her in the Agartala Conspiracy Case. During the War of Liberation, Sheikh Hasina said, Begum Mujib, a very intelligent and farsighted woman, kept contact with the freedom fighters from her captive life.

Sheikh Hasina said without any ideology a person can give nothing to the people and the country. She urged all Awami League and BCL leaders and workers to read the Unfinished Memoirs of Bangabandhu to know about the life struggle, sacrifice and dedication of Bangabandhu.
