Germany To Provide 208 Million Euro For Fighting Climate Change

Newly appointed German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Thomas Heinrich Prinz informed this when he paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office here this morning.

PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.

Prinz said that Germany would continue its partnership in the Bangladesh's development strides, saying that Bangladesh achieved tremendous success in socioeconomic uplift. "Bangladesh is on the right track of development," he said.

Referring to Bangladesh's stunning progress in ICT sector, the German envoy expressed his high hope to bring some investment from his country in this sector.

He said that at present on an average 1500 students are getting German visa for higher study annually and this time, it might be increased.

Mentioning Bangladesh's potentials in biogas, Dr Prinz said 26 percent of the total energy consumption of his country comes from renewable energy. "We want to increase it to 50 percent," he said.

Paying deep homage to Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the German ambassador said he was a great orator and the people of Germany hold him in high esteem.

In this connection, he mentioned his recent visit to Bangabandhu Memorial Museum and said: "History speaks."

Referring to his visit to Dhaka Medical College Hospital burn unit after the countrywide violence and petrol bomb attacks by the BNP-Jamaat clique, he said he witnessed the unbearable sufferings of the burn victims.

In this connection, he said that Germany would help Bangladesh to set up a separate burn institute in the country.

Welcoming the new German ambassador in Bangladesh, the Prime Minister appreciated the sustained commitments of Germany to Bangladesh through development cooperation since its independence.

She said that Bangladesh is a very lucrative destination for investment and sought more investment in the country as it has a very liberal investment policy.

Mentioning Bangladesh's growing shipbuilding industry in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina said that there is a scope for cooperation in this sector.

Talking about the establishment of a separate burn institute in the country, Sheikh Hasina said that her government has already taken a decision in this regard.

She recalled that Germany was one of the first European countries which recognised Bangladesh after its independence.

The Prime Minister also invited the German Chancellor Angela Merkel through the Ambassador to visit Bangladesh at her convenient time.

PMO Secretary Suraiya Begum and PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim were present on the occasion.
