Published on April 6, 2015The approval was given in the regular meeting of the cabinet held at the cabinet room of Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting cabinet secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said the trade agreement will be for five years and auto renewable for next five years. The agreement will come into effect from April 1, 2015 as the existing agreement expired on March 31 last.
The cabinet also approved in principle the draft of the 'Port (amendment) Act, 2015 under which port authorities would be allowed to construct any infrastructure to keep the river ports functional.
The new law has been prepared amending the existing 'Port Act, 1908", the cabinet secretary said adding a new clause has been included which will override the existing provision of the 'Natural Water Bodies Act, 2000' that prohibited use of play ground, open space, or natural water bodies for any purpose.
After passage of the new law, the cabinet secretary said the port authorities can use the natural water bodies and open spaces to keep the port operational.
The cabinet secretary said the cabinet went for a threadbare discussion on the "National Social Security Strategy of Bangladesh" placed by the Planning Commission. After long discussion, the cabinet has given some observations and asked for revising the documents, cabinet secretary said.
