"We are putting our best effort to supply adequate power for Boro cultivation," an official to the Power Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry said.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led Awami League government has undertaken special measures to increase electricity generation by constructing various power plants all over the country.

"To materialize the government's vision 2021, the ministry has given instruction to take all out efforts for generating electricity smoothly during the major crops yielding season," the officials added.

Talking to BSS Project Director of Ashuganj 225MW Combined Cycle and 200MW Modular Power Plant Ajit Kumar Sarkar today said that the Ashuganj 200MW Modular Power Plant, sponsored by United power has already generated electricity partly.

He expected that the Ashuganj 225MW Combined Cycle Power Plant would go on power production in March.

The ministry official, however, said the ministry recently asked all concerned for taking special measure to ensure adequate electricity supply for irrigation season.

Last year, the government supplied 6,766MW against the maximum demand of 7,356MW electricity during the Boro season and the rest 590MW was managed through load-shedding management.

According to the ministry's statistics, currently power generation capacity reached to 11,265MW. The government gave maximum priority to an increased rice production to make the country self-sufficient in food grains.

Besides, the Awami League government has a target to generate 20,000 megawatt (MW) electricity within the Vision 2021 aimed at providing electricity to all citizens by 2021 at reasonable price, it said.
