ADB shows interest to invest in Housing projects of Bangladesh

Satisfied with the progress achieved under the government initiatives so far, the manila based lender, for the first time since its inception, expressed its interest to make investment in the sector.

During a discussion on finding out possible projects, Lakshmi Venkatachalam, vice-president for Private Sector and Co-finance Operations showed the intent to Bangladesh Bank governor Atiur Rahman at its headquarter.

The assistance will give further boost to the expansion of the ongoing “One farm one house” project.

Currently, the government implementing the project through the newly established ‘Palli Sanchay Bank' (rural savings bank) to provide support to the rural and under-privileged people and to give institutional form to the project which it hopes would be instrumental in alleviating poverty.

"This project can be implemented on a large scale with the ADB's assistance or another new project can be undertaken to this end, " Atiur Rahman hoped.

The governor went to Manila on Nov 23 to receive the ‘GUSI Peace Prize International 2014’ Award for his work in economics with a focus on welfare of the poor. It was handed over to him on Wednesday.
