Bangladesh Wins Silver And Bronze At 55th International Math Olympiad

Dhaka College student Nur Muhammad Shafiullah won the silver medal while Adib Hasan from Mymensing Zila School won the Bronze.

Four other students who got an honourable mention award are Sanzeed Anwar, Asif E Elahi, Sazid Akhter Turzo and Mutasim Mim.

Shafiullah scored 22 points, Adib Hasan scored 15, Sanjid Anwar scored 14, Asif-E Elahi 14, Sajid Akhtar 10 and Mutasim Mim scored 8 points in the competition. Bangladesh scored a total of 84 points which is the best score in Bangladesh’s career.

The result, which was announced by International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) yesterday, is also available on the organisation’s site.

Confirming the feat of Bangladeshi students, President of Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad president Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury said the team’s total score is 84 and Bangladesh’s rank is 53 among 101 teams. He termed the result best Bangladesh team has made in the last 10 years.

“The most encouraging thing is that comparatively new and young members of the team did well in the Olympiad,” he said. “We hope that we will get more medals in the coming years.”

560 students from 101 countries have participated in the 55th International mathematics Olympiad held in South Africa. 49 students were awarded Gold medals, 113 students won Silver medal and 133 students achieved Bronze medals in the contest. 151 contestants achieved honorary mention by the Judges.
