Padma Bridge Is An Unique Example: PM

"Insha Allah the work on Padma Bridge has already begun and it would be an unique example and exceptional addition in the region," she told a crowded press conference here today.

The press conference was arranged at the official residence of the Prime Minister this afternoon on the outcome of her just- concluded China visit.

Sheikh Hasina said there were many conspiracies and obstructions to foil the construction of the bridge, and reasons behind it were to topple the Awami League government.

"In fact, I was the target of these plots as I completed the trial of killers of Bangabandhu and executed the verdict and I started the trial of war criminals," she said.

She said: "You know well that we faced tremendous pressure from different quarters on the question of the trial of 1971 culprits. Padma Bridge issue was a lame excuse."

She said the conspirators wanted to belittle me, my sister and family by raising the question of alleged conspiracy of graft in the process of Padma bridge construction.

By the grace of Almighty Allah, she said, no conspiracy was found. "We had thrown challenge to the people who raised allegation. But, now they are keeping mum, as they did not find any wrongdoings," she said.

The Prime Minister said she and her family do not work for personal gain. "Our aim is to develop the country and the people, and we are dedicated to the country and the people," she said.

Sheikh Hasina mentioned that she always thinks about the welfare of the people. "We always want to do such things for which the people would feel proud and move with keeping their head high," she said.
