"There are many great achievements of the War of Liberation and the history of sacrifice of the countrymen in the war. So, it is our expectation that you would project that achievements and the history of sacrifice through films," she said.

The Prime Minister said this while distributing the National Film Award 2012 at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre Here in the afternoon.

Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu presided over the function, while Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Ministry AKM Rahmatullah spoke as the special guest.

Information Secretary Martuza Ahmed delivered the welcome address and celebrated actor Khalil Ullah Khan, who won the lifetime achievement award, spoke on behalf of the award-recipients.

Ministers, parliament members, high government officials as well as film stars attended the colourful function.

Putting emphasis on modernisation of the movie houses, she urged all concerned to improve the overall environment of film arena and movie houses side by side with making quality films. "I would like to request all concerned to make operative the movie houses that were shut down in Dhaka and elsewhere and arrangement will have to be made to provide entertainment for the people by screening digital films in those cinemas," she said.

She hoped that Bangladesh's films would be one of the supportive forces in building a happy and prosperous country as well as building such a community that would be inspired with human values.

The Prime Minister said culture, history and heritage-all are reflected in film and it has been playing a vital role in changing the society.

She said the film provides entertainment for the people and expresses our thought. "It portrays joy and sorrow, love and separation, struggle and the story of pervading clash of justice and injustice," she said.

Congratulating the winners of the National Film Award 2012,Sheikh Hasina hoped that it would encourage the creative,talented and patriotic filmmakers in making healthy films.

Earlier, the Prime Minister handed over National Film Award 2012 to 23 noted film artistes and technicians in 24 categories from a well-decorated stage.
