"We have been making tireless efforts to strengthen democracy and maintain its continuity. We had no mentality to snatch the democratic and voting rights of the people in the past and our fight to this end would also continue in future," she said.

The Prime Minister said this when a delegation of Bangladesh Tariqat Federation called on her at her office here this morning.
Blasting the opposition for the countrywide killing, terrorism and anarchy in the name of the movement, the Prime Minister asked, "burning the people to death and torching and vandalizing public and private property are what type of politics?" Reiterating her firm commitment to wiping out militancy and terrorism for ever, Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh was recognized as a safe haven for terrorists and militants during the rule of the past BNP-Jamaat government. But after coming to power, she said, the present government has freed the country from this stigma as it dealt the terrorism and militancy with iron hands.
"Bangladesh has now been recognized as a role model on the world stage due to its tremendous successes in different fields," she said.

Pointing out the graft index published recently by the Transparency International, Sheikh Hasina said the index has proved that corruption has declined to a great extent in Bangladesh.

"But a section of people in the country feel shy to admit this," she said.
