Listing various steps for preaching and expansion of Islam,Sheikh Hasina said her government has undertaken initiatives to make madrasa education, including Qaumi madrasa education, more time-befitting. We are modernizing the madrasa education and making it time-befitting so that students could get certificates and jobs after passing from madrasas. In this context, she mentioned the formation of the Qaumi Madrasa Commission with leading religious leaders and scholars.
Sheikh Hasina said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took various initiatives for the welfare of the holy religion Islam. "Bangabandhu established the Islamic Foundation and Madrasa Education Board, and banned liquor, gambling as well as horse race at Suhrawardy Udyan," she said. Besides, he allocated land for Biswa Ijtema on the bank of the Turag river and for Kakrail Mosque in Dhaka. Following in his footsteps, Sheikh Hasina said her government implemented various programmes for preaching and expansion of Islam.
In this regard, she mentioned that all district-level offices of Islamic Foundation have been brought under revenue sector, while religious education has been made mandatory. Besides, the government has formed a trust for welfare of the country's imams and muezzins, she added. The government also constructed buildings of 1,000 madrasas for the development of madrasa education, she said, adding more such buildings would be constructed in future.
Terming Islam as a religion of peace, the Prime Minister said the people are performing their respective religions freely in the country now as her government has ensured equal rights of all religions.
Deputy Leader of Jatiya Sangsad Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury,senior Awami League leaders Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Kazi Zafarullah, Syed Ashraful Islam and Dr Hassan Mahmud, PM's Advisors HT Imam, Dr Alauddin Ahmed and Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury were present, among others.
