Sheikh Hasina is Bangladesh’s Mahathir: Sajeeb Wazed

Comparing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Malaysia’s former leader Mahathir Mohamed, her ICT Affairs Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy has said the premier was leading from the front.

“Bangladesh’s Mahathir ( Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina) is right in front of all of us,” said Joy, also the son of the premier, at a reception hosted by the US unit Awami League in New York on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning in Bangladesh time).

“Three to four years ago, people used to talk to me about how Singapore and Malaysia had advanced a lot. The Mahathir government had managed to develop Malaysia because they were voted to office four straight times, for 20 years. It helped Malaysia become an influential country in the world. So, they advanced. Where is your Mahathir, they asked?” he said.

“In reply, I want to tell them that our Mahathir is right in front of us,” he said, adding, Bangladesh, at its present state, is in second position in the world in terms of the pace of growth of economy.

“The income and employment of the people of Bangladesh is increasing every year and there is no scarcity of food and electricity,” he observed.

On the Rohingya issue, he said: “The Rohingya issue is a massive challenge for us. But I am proud that we are managing to help and provide shelter to the people from our neighbouring country. We are doing that all on our own. We are not taking any assistance from anyone.”

“Bangladesh is no longer as it was before. We are a new country now. And if Awami League remains in power in future, we will become a developed country,” he promised.

Awami League leaders and activists greeted his words with cheers and slogans: “Awami League Sarkar Barbar Dorkar (We need Awami League in power every time).”

Joy ended by saying: “So, I would suggest the prime minister be voted to power over and over again.”
